Frequently asked questions
What is the HECS repayment threshold for 2026-27?
For 2026-27, compulsory repayments start once your HELP repayment income passes $69,528. Below that, no compulsory repayment is due, though voluntary repayments are still allowed.
How is my HECS repayment calculated?
From 1 July 2025 Australia uses a marginal system: you repay a percentage only of the income above each threshold, not your whole income. This calculator applies the current marginal HELP/STSL rates to your repayment income.
What counts as HELP repayment income?
It is your taxable income plus reportable fringe benefits, reportable (salary-sacrificed) super contributions, net investment or rental losses, and any exempt foreign employment income. Enter that combined figure for the most accurate result.
Does indexation add to my balance?
Yes. On 1 June each year your outstanding balance is indexed (recently capped to the lower of CPI or WPI). Indexation is applied before your compulsory repayment from your tax return is credited, so a large balance can grow faster than a small repayment reduces it.
Should I make voluntary HECS repayments?
That depends on your full situation and is not something this calculator advises on. It shows the numbers - your compulsory repayment, indexation, and an estimated payoff - so you can weigh it up. For personal advice, speak to a licensed professional.
